Second Life Email Revitalization

EMAIL MARKETING & RETENTION STRATEGY

Revitalized a dormant email channel into a weekly newsletter designed to reengage the virtual world Second Life’s active community.

Role: Marketing Content Specialist

Goal: Reduce post-pandemic churn by pivoting strategy from acquisition to retention.

Result: 30-40% newsletter open rates

The Challenge:

Following an unprecedented surge in active users during global lockdowns, platform usage began to decline as offline activities resumed. Email marketing had been largely dormant, consisting of only two routine broadcast emails per year (Winter Holidays and Platform Anniversary). We needed a sustainable email strategy to reengage our user base and drive consistent log-ins.

The Strategy & Execution:

I took end-to-end ownership of the email content strategy:

  • Cohort Segmentation: Developed a weekly newsletter for high-value power users while revamping seasonal campaigns with stronger editorial content and community-focused storytelling.

  • Content Integration: Highlighted weekly featured in-game destinations and promoted upcoming live events to incentivize immediate log-ins.

  • UGC & Community Spotlight: Introduced "Fresh Looks," a dedicated section featuring top avatar photography sourced from our official Flickr community, driving cross-platform engagement.

  • Commerce & Event Promotion: Featured shopping events, limited time offers, and free virtual items to drive Marketplace discovery and incentivize in-world event attendance.

The Impact & Results

30–40% Open Rates: Weekly newsletters consistently achieved benchmark open rates (~30%), with top-performing sends reaching 40%. Email CTR averaged 2.5-4%.

Reactivated Engagement: Transformed email from twice-yearly blasts into a steady channel for community retention.
